Selling to the world from Nigeria: payments, time zones and trust

Clients in London, Toronto and Houston are only a click away. Winning them takes more than a good service. It takes a business that feels easy and safe to buy from, wherever the customer is.

A Nigerian business today can serve a client in London before lunch and one in Toronto before dinner. Software, design, consulting, travel services, education, food, fashion and media are all sold across borders every day. The internet removed the distance.

What it did not remove is doubt. A customer abroad cannot walk into your office. They decide whether to trust you based on what they see online, how easy it is to pay, and how quickly you respond. Get those right and geography stops mattering. Get them wrong and you lose the sale without ever knowing it was there.

The real problem: friction that you never see

Lost international customers rarely complain. They just leave. The causes are usually small:

  • A website that loads slowly or looks broken on their phone
  • Prices only in naira, or no price at all, with no idea how to pay
  • A checkout that rejects their card
  • A booking link that shows times in the wrong time zone
  • An enquiry that sits unanswered overnight, then gets a reply that feels rushed
  • No registration details, address or terms, so the business feels risky

Each one is fixable. Together, they decide whether you look like a local shop or a serious company.

Make it easy to pay

Payment is where many cross-border sales die. Think through the experience from the customer's side.

  • Offer payment methods that suit each audience: local cards and bank transfer at home, international cards abroad
  • Confirm with your payment provider which currencies and card types are actually supported before you promise them on your site
  • Show prices clearly, and say which currency they are in
  • Send a proper invoice and receipt with your registered company name
  • For larger projects, link payments to milestones so new clients do not have to pay everything upfront

Make time zones invisible

Serving clients across Africa, Europe and North America means juggling time zones. Do not make the customer do the maths.

  • Use booking tools that show availability in the visitor's own time zone automatically
  • State your working hours and the time zone they are in
  • Set expectations for response times and keep them
  • Use asynchronous updates, such as written summaries, short recorded walkthroughs and shared progress trackers, so clients are never waiting for a call to know what is happening

Show you are real

International customers look for different trust signals from local ones. Serve both.

  • Your registered company name and registration number
  • A physical address and working contact channels, including WhatsApp and email on your own domain
  • Clear terms, privacy policy and refund or cancellation rules
  • Real work they can click on, not just screenshots
  • Consistent, professional presentation across your website and social media

Never invent numbers, logos or testimonials to look bigger. Global clients check, and one false claim undoes everything else.

Communicate like a global company

Clear, plain English travels further than local idioms or heavy jargon. Put key details in writing: scope, timelines, costs and what happens next. A short written summary after every call prevents misunderstandings across distance and culture.

Build for the slowest connection and the fastest expectation

Your website has two jobs at once. At home, it has to load quickly on mid-range phones and mobile data. Abroad, it has to feel instant and polished. That means lightweight pages, modern hosting that serves content from locations close to each visitor, and testing on the devices your customers actually use.

Follow up like you mean it

International clients often compare several providers at once. The one who replies clearly, on time and in writing usually wins, even over a cheaper option. Set up templates for common enquiries, use a shared inbox or system so nothing gets lost, and make sure every enquiry gets a human response quickly. Speed and clarity are a competitive advantage that costs very little.
