Digital marketing for Nigerian small businesses: where to start
You do not need a agency retainer on day one. You need one channel working, proof that strangers can find you, and a habit you can keep when work gets busy.

Walk through any market in Abuja and half the stalls now have Instagram handles written on cardboard. That is progress — and it is also why shouting into every platform at once rarely works. Customers cannot tell if you are serious when your last post was Ramadan 2024 and your Google listing still shows the old phone number.
Digital marketing for a small business is not “go viral.” It is making sure the right people can find you, trust you and reach you without friction. Start narrow, measure honestly, then add channels.
Week one: make yourself findable
- Complete your Google Business Profile with address, hours, photos and the services you actually sell
- Put WhatsApp Business on the number you answer — catalogue, quick replies, away messages
- Pick one social platform your customers use (often Instagram or Facebook here) and commit to it
- Add your website or booking link to bio, receipts and voice notes — stop making people hunt
Week two to four: earn trust in public
Content does not have to be cinematic. Answer the questions you already get in DMs:
- Price ranges, delivery areas, turnaround times, what is included
- Short clips of work in progress — kitchens, salons, sites, studios
- Screenshots of reviews (with permission) and thank-you messages
- A clear “how to order” post pinned at the top
Collect names you own
Followers belong to the platform. Phone numbers and emails belong to you. A simple list — even a Google Sheet — of people who bought once is worth more than 10,000 passive followers. Offer a reason to join: early access, a discount code, a menu PDF.
When paid ads make sense
Turn on Meta or Google ads after you know what a customer is worth and which message gets replies. Test with a small daily budget aimed at one city or one offer. If organic posts get no engagement, ads will not fix positioning — they will only speed up silence.
Our digital marketing team runs campaigns for clients and for group companies, so the playbooks are tested on real P&Ls. Book a strategy call if you want the first ninety days mapped to your budget, not a generic content calendar.
